Celtic dealt Old Firm injury setback

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side have been dealt a huge setback ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final clash.

What’s the latest?

In his pre-match press conference prior to Rangers’ meeting with Sporting Braga tonight, Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that all three of John Lundstram, Calvin Bassey and Ryan Jack are in contention to feature in the Europa League quarter-final second leg, as the trio have now recovered from their respective knocks.

Speaking about the current state of his squad, the Dutchman said: “Lundstram is training [on Wednesday] so hopefully available for [Thursday]. Both Bassey and Jack are available.”

Postecoglou will be gutted

Considering how solid all three of Lundstram, Bassey and Jack have been for Rangers so far this season, the news that they were all back in contention for tonight, and, subsequently Celtic’s meeting with the Light Blues in the Scottish Cup semi-final this Sunday, is sure to have left Postecoglou gutted.

Are you confident of a result on Sunday?

Indeed, over Bassey’s 26 Premiership appearances in the current campaign, the £900k-rated defender has been hugely impressive in Van Bronckhorst’s backline. He has helped his side to keep 13 clean sheets, making 0.6 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and 1.2 clearances and winning 5.2 duels (at a success rate of 62%) per game.

These returns have seen the £10k-per-week Nigerian average a SofaScore match rating of 6.97, ranking him as Rangers’ 15th-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

Meanwhile, central midfielder Jack has averaged a SofaScore match rating of 6.91 over his eight league outings this term, while fellow midfielder Lundstram has averaged a rating of 6.88 over his 25 top-flight matches.

As such, the fact that the previously stricken trio look as if they will be available for selection on Sunday is sure to come as a huge blow to Postecoglou and his Celtic side, who would take a huge step towards securing a famous domestic treble with a victory over their Old Firm rivals at Hampden Park.
