First player confirms Burnley exit following Premier League relegation

January arrival Wout Weghorst has confirmed that he will be leaving relegated Burnley this summer while on international duty with the Netherlands.

The striker arrived as a replacement for Chris Wood in January, joining from German side Wolfsburg. However, despite a strong start he could not deliver the goals that his side desperately needed in order to avoid the drop, managing just 2 in 20 appearances for the Lancashire side.

And, as the dust settles, it seems as though he will be packing his bags this summer, either on loan or permanently, as he targets a spot in Louis Van Gaal’s World Cup squad.

‘We have clearly agreed in advance that I will not play in the Championship’, he told Dutch media.

It is unclear where his next destination lies, though sides in Turkey have been credited with an interest.

Mass exodus in the works

Weghorst is among many players set to depart this summer, with the Burnley squad littered with Premier League-level talent and likely to be picked apart as clubs look to take advantage of the Lancashire club’s financial peril.

Defensive stalwarts Ben Mee and James Tarkowski are expected to leave for free when their contracts run out this summer, while Josh Brownhill also has interest in him and England international Nick Pope will almost certainly be angling for a move away to ensure his place in November’s World Cup squad.

Further forwards, both Maxwel Cornet and Dwight McNeil are also set to be subject to Premier League interest, with the pair having proved themselves well-equipped to succeed in the top flight.
